What is PPE in the oil and gas industry?
On worksites in the oil and gas industry, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required to stay safe. The required PPE usually includes respiratory protection, portable gas monitors, eye protection, hearing protection, hand and foot protection, fall arrest systems, and flame-resistant clothing. The specific levels of protection required from these pieces of equipment will vary based on the job responsibilities and the relevant safety standards for your industry.
What is flame-retardant clothing?
Also called flame resistant clothing, FR clothing is any garment designed to protect against hazards like fires and extreme heat. Unlike regular clothing, flame-resistant garments will resist igniting and self-extinguish. They’re also designed not to melt or break open under heat to prevent heat-related injuries. FR clothing is required in oil and gas industries because of highly flammable liquids and gases and a much higher risk of flash fires than in many industries. However, the FR clothing you choose needs to be specifically designed for the oil and gas industries. Not all FR gear protects against flash fires specifically — for those hazards, consider arc flash clothing.
What do oilfield workers wear?
Oilfield workers need to wear a lot of long-lasting, highly durable PPE to protect from the many hazards in the industry. FR clothing, like we mentioned above, is a must to protect against fire hazards. Because oilfield work is outside, protection against extreme temperatures, including cold, is a must, as is protection from rain and other weather-related issues. Weather will also impact how slippery the environment is and how visible you are when working, so being able to grip tools, arrest falls, and remain highly visible by wearing hi-vis clothing at work are requirements. Respiratory protection against chemicals, debris, and other particulates is crucial.
