The GammaRAE II R contains two separate sensors. The Cesium Iodide (CsI) scintillator provides a fast, two-second response to radiological threats, while the energy-compensated PIN diode provides high dose rate range coverage and accurate dose measurements.
The GammaRAE II R accumulates accurate total dose measurements. Stored dosage data can be cumulative or reset for each use period. It alerts the wearer with a loud audible alarm, bright flashing LED lights, and a built-in vibration alarm. For stealth operations, law enforcement personnel can disable each alarm individually.
Immersible (IP67) design makes for reliable operation in wet environments and easy decontamination. Intrinsically Safe (IS) certification permits operation in potentially flammable/explosive environments. Datalogging uses built-in Bluetooth radio to interface with computer for datalog download and configuration changes.

GammaRAE II R Video Transcript
Hi! This is Rick Pedley, and welcome to PK Safety Supply!
Today we're going to be looking at the RAE Systems GammaRAE II R. This is a personal radiation detector and decimeter in one. We'll be looking at what comes in the box and some of the features. So, we'll start by pulling it out. Open the box. On top, you're going to get a calibration and test certificate. Now, this unit needs no calibration once you've received it from the factory, so set that aside. Owner's manual -- quite a bit of information in here. It's available for download on our site. Warranty card… pretty typical stuff… and then the unit itself. Batteries -- these are just AA alkaline. Nothing special there. A belt clip and a wrist lanyard.
So we'll pull the unit out here. It's black rubberized. It's a little hard maybe to see on the video, but there's a mode button on the left and a set button on the right. Mode turns the unit on and off and goes through the menus. Set allows you to change the values. We have a high decibel alarm on the front and a bright LEDs on either side that are going to go off on various situations. There's also a vibration alarm. Digital display on the top is going to tell you what's going on. On the back, there's a stainless steel alligator clip. It's quite heavy and has serrated edges which are going to grab on to your belt, vest or whatever you might have in mind. There's also a ring to go with a lanyard and a single screw will allow you to put the belt clip on.
So the unit comes with the batteries separate, and they give you an allen wrench here and there's a little thing on the side which will open up. Let's back that out, pop the thing out. There's an indication on the back for which way the batteries should go. So just stick those in there. Pop the cover back on, and we tighten the screw on with the provided allen wrench.
OK. To turn it on, we're going to hit the mode switch. We'll just hold it down -- usually about three to five seconds… an alarm goes off. See these LEDs on either side? Not very bright under the lights here, but in the dim room, it would be quite visible.
While the thing's warming up -- which takes about two minutes -- it's going to check the background radiation. Hopefully we're in an area that does not have radiation, so it's going to set a baseline. And check out the sensors. Make sure that the sensors are working properly. If there's a problem, it's going to tell you. So while it's doing that, we'll just think about a couple of features.
The data log of the decimeter will keep a running tally of what you have been exposed to. The unit, interestingly, has stealth mode so you can go into the menus and eliminate the bright LEDs and the loud alarm so that the unit will only vibrate. Very good if you're in some place where you don't want the unit to alarm people.
It's quite regularly built with a rubberized exterior. Quite water resistant. And it can be dropped from five feet. The batteries, which are included, are good for about 900 hours of runtime. And, as with any electronic unit, if you're not going to use it for quite some time, it's probably a good idea to use the batteries.
The weight with the batteries is about 11 ounces. The case, rubberized, has metal underneath so it's quite RF-resistant, so things like radios aren't going to set the unit off. So now it's up to speed. It's measuring two cycles per second.
There's a tremendous amount of information in the user's manual about how you might actually use the thing. It also has built-in bluetooth, so you can communicate with a PC. There's ProRAE software available for download on the RAE Systems website. This will allow you to take the different information this thing might gather and then manipulate it on your computer and, in fact, maybe do a few adjustments on the thing as well.
Now when we turn the unit off, we're going to follow a process similar to the mode switch. We're just going to press it in and hold it. And once it's been about two to three seconds, it's going to start beeping and telling you that the unit's turning off. So it's counting down right now from five to zero, and then once that's happened, it's going to complete its shutdown and we're ready to go.
That's basically that! Thank you very much!
