N95 means it is 95% effective against particulates free of oil. Generally this means it is used for dry particles and dusts from materials such as coal, cotton, cadmium, flour and free silica, etc. It also protects against non-toxic water-based aerosols such as mists whose liquid does not produce harmful vapors or gases.
