When working at heights (roofing, framing, gutter, solar panel AC installation etc) one of the biggest safety risks is having a fall. The obvious way to protect yourself is to tie off and secure yourself against the structure, although this is not always possible (the chimney is too far, the antennae wont support your weight...) and so using a tested, easy to install and durable roof anchor point allows you to attach lanyards and ropes, which can then be attached to personal protective equipment (PPE) such as a safety harness.
There are a variety of ways by which these devices can be attached to a building, on both residential and commercial sites, permanent or temporary fixings, with or without SRLs; all of which meet the Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) standards and are ANSI rated to a variety of weights and force loads when properly installed.
For anyone planning to offer a permanent anchor point for roofing contractors in the future, steel anchor points such as the Protecta (2103678) and DBI (210367) models can be fixed to a joust and left exposed when the roofing work is complete; the DBI roof anchor point even features a weatherproof flashing and a cap to ensure water resistance, whilst hiding it from everyday view.
For commercial builds DBI has a pair of flat-roof anchor points: for Membrane Roofs as well as Metal or Wooden Sheath Roofs. Both are extremely easy to install and feature special ‘tipping’ designs to distribute any pull forces evenly across the flat roof.
Sometimes you only need a roof anchor for a short time, or perhaps you want an anchor point you can use over and over again. Fortunately there are a variety of easy to install (simply hammer a few nails into a joust) temporary and removable roof anchor points: SALA offer the 'AJ730A' and '2103676', which are both steel-plated reusable anchor points. While DBI has a more flexible reusable roof anchor point in the ‘2103673’, which can even form part of a horizontal-lifeline as it has been designed to have sufficient strength in a number of directions.
Protecta offers a cheap alternative solution with the Disposable Anchor Point, which can be used throughout construction and simply hammered down and built over when the job is complete, no removal necessary!
Should you need to combine a roof anchor point with a Self Retracting Lanyard (not included), there are two options which allow for easy installation of an SRL: the DBI ‘2105683’ which offers full 360 degrees of rotation in a solid flat roof mounting point, while the Standing Seam DBI01-2103675 has telescopic legs to mount on a variety of seam widths.
Finally, should you have a horizontal safety line set up you can easily attach a roof anchor with a Rope Grab Anchor Point, offering a durable, mobile solution for any site with a horizontal lifeline already in place.
Outside of traditional roof anchor solutions, we also offer the three-man, reusable roof anchor from Capital Safety: allowing you to rapidly setup up and secure the roof of any large worksite.
Anyone seeking a complete solution for OSHA compliance should check out the ‘Compliance in a Can’ kits from DBI. There is a ‘Light’ version for those on a budget and the ‘Roof Anchor Fall Protection Kit’ is available for those seeking a more comprehensive solution. These kits include anchor point, attachment nails/screws, lanyards, ropes and safety harnesses.
This range of options covers almost any roof access or work at heights scenario. Meaning that whatever your job (joiner, roofer, framer, glazer, construction, solar technician, mason, satellite installer… we could go on) we have a piece of fall protection equipment that can secure your worksite, meet compliance and keep you and your team safe.
