PK Safety Supply was founded under the name of Pedley-Knowles and Company in San Francisco in September 1947 by Eric L. Pedley and Josiah Knowles, ship-captain, when they purchased the interests of Martin & Turner Co., heavy marine equipment agents.

Pedley-Knowles and Company began in the heavy marine industry and expanded their trade to include general chandlery items to U.S. Flag ships such as American President Lines, States Steamship and Pacific Far East Lines. War years were good to the chandlery business, especially during the Korean and Vietnam wars.

In the mid 1950's Eric L. Pedley and his nephew, Phil Pedley of Pedley Nets (located in Glen Ellen, California), formed a manufacturing and sales alliance to promote the use of safety nets on high rise buildings, bridge construction and maintenance, and special nets for children's use at theme parks and play grounds. Through a patented manufacturing process they were able to gain preeminence in the safety netting field. Today these nets can still be found underneath the Golden Gate Bridge and in many amusement parks for children's use.

The chandlery business continued with the addition of Eric A. Pedley (Eric L. Pedley's son) and Mel Freeman in 1960. Eric A. Pedley came from Bethlehem Shipbuilding with expertise in mechanics of ships; Mel came from Tidewater Oil Company with expertise in and connections with the Philippine shipping industry which gave the Company access to a new market.

In the early 1970's the Pedley-Knowles board of directors suggested changing the focus of the Company to safety equipment: OSHA had just been formed (1972) and shipping in the Bay Area was in serious decline leading to the total phase-out of the ship chandlery business which provided vast product knowledge and instilled service as a necessary sales ingredient.

Keeping the family tradition, Eric S. (Rick) Pedley (Eric A. Pedley's son) joined the Company in 1979. In 1982 Eric L. Pedley retired and the relationship with Pedley Nets came to an end; the Company moved to a new location on Illinois Street in San Francisco . Within a few years, the Company was managed by Eric S. (Rick) Pedley.

In 1996 Eric S. (Rick) Pedley moved the Company from Illinois Street in San Francisco to Oakland. At that time the company name was shortened to PK Safety Supply.

On December 21st of 2001 PK Safety Supply moved its location to Alameda Marina in Alameda CA.
