The AK105A combines ease of use with adjustable height at a very attractive price point. The unit weighs 39 lbs., and is only 65 in. overall in length once folded with the legs retracted. Once deployed, the system has a total diameter of up to 86 in. between the legs.
This unit is usually ordered with the Protecta AK203AG Confined Space Winch and AK020A1 Snatch Block Pulley to make a ready-to-work system for raising and lowering both personnel and equipment. May also be combined with the AD515AG Self Retracting Lifeline/Winch for those applications where the tripod is the only means of support for the worker, and two lines are required.
Once the tripod legs are opened, they lock in position. Then the legs each have adjustable length that can be locked at eight different heights by means of locking pins to account for uneven or out of level work surfaces. An adjustable length cable connects the leg-ends to control spreading under load and is integral to the strength of the device.
The tripod head is cast aluminum, and the legs are are made of anodized aluminum rectangular tubing. Reflective safety tape is applied for added visibility on the street, while the feet have skid-resistant tread on the soles. Note that the tripod does not have a built-in or integral pulley, so please consider ordering the AK020A1 Pulley and Carabiner combination.
As a single anchorage point the tripod is rated at 5,000 lbs. Meets OSHA 1910 & ANSI Z359.1-1998 standards for confined-space entry devices.

Protecta AK105A Aluminum Tripod Video Transcript
Hi! This is Rick Pedley and welcome to PK Safety Supply. Today, we're going to be looking at the Protecta AK105A Confined Space Tripod. This is an aluminum tripod using square aluminum tubing that provides you with a high anchor point for pulling people in and out of confined spaces. Now we're going to show you how to set it up and point out some of the features.
Ok, so usually when we're working with a tripod, we're starting with it lying on the ground. This thing has adjustable legs for length. Detent pins allow you to shorten it and lengthen it. They have a keeper on them, so when we take the keeper off and pull it out, we can push this in and pull it out. They have nice markings on the leg. Two, three, four five and so on, up and down the line. Gives you a pretty easy frame of reference for setting this up so you get them all the same length. We'll look at the winch a little bit later. I think it's best attached on the ground as well using this system because it does use these detent pins to do it.
You'll also notice that we've got these feet at the bottom. These have rubber on one side, and you can tilt them to dig in if you have a rough surface or something like that. You see we have some reflective tape at the top. Will show up if you're using this thing at night. Headlights, so on and so forth. So we're going to lift it up. Very lightweight. After we do that, we pull the legs out. And what's kind of nice is that this thing has a keeper at the top. So as you come out, these things lock into place, keeping them from collapsing back in on themselves.
The other thing you can see and probably hear on the tape is the chain. A chain is an integral part of any confined space tripod in that we have to be able to pull 5,000 pounds from this center location here. If we do that and the floor is kind of slick or anything like that, these legs could easily start to spread out, and the thing would just collapse. So the chain, one you're set up, depending on the height, you'll take the slack out of it and that will give it a tremendous amount of additional strength.
This tripod also has four anchor points. The central one is probably the one you use the most often, but there's three others which allow you to maybe put an equipment hoist or anything you want on there… additional things you could put on the legs.
Other than that, that's about it. It's an economy tripod. Compared to our DBI-SALA brand, it's certainly not quite the number of features, but for an economy product, it's very well made and we've really sold a ton of these and they're used all over, meet all the standards and are definitely good for the contractor market. Thank you!
