3M 2091 P100 Particulate Filter Video Transcript

Hi! This is Rick Pedley and welcome to PK Safety Supply!

Today we're talking about the 3M 2091 P100 Particulate Filter. The 3M P100 fits onto the 6000 series respirators, both half, full face and the 3M 7500 half mask respirator. Now, P100 is the current name for HEPA or High Efficiency Particulate Air filter.

Now, the P in P100 means that it's oil-proof. Now, what's interesting about that is that these filters are electrostatic filters. That is, they have a static charge. This static charge attracts and traps the dust that comes through. So what they're giving you here are two filters. You have both on the mask at one time and they're soft! We call them a pancake filter. They're made of a kind of polypropylene material. They have a little bit of fuzzy stuff inside to keep them from crushing. But they're very comfortable and extremely lightweight. You can put these on your mask and it's easy to breathe through and hardly feels like anything's there. And if you do brush up against something, they do bend a little bit.

For instance, if I were wearing a welding helmet, this would be a very convenient filter to be wearing. One thing we do want to watch out for when we're welding is sparks. Because it's a polypropylene material, it will burn. And when I say burn, I mean that they'll char. So, if you've got a spark here, it'd put a little hole in it. They will not catch fire. They're self-extinguishing. but that's kind of important. If that comes up, if that's an application you're thinking about, where there are flying sparks… maybe you're grinding metal for instance… if those sparks might hit the filters, I'd suggest using their model 7093, which has a plastic case -- shaped a little differently. But uh, we wear these filters in particular… the big ones are asbestos and lead.

Now, asbestos… if you're a home owner and you're working on some duct work, maybe you're working on your car and you've got some old style brake linings with asbestos in them, this'd be the thing to wear. It's gonna protect you from that.

In the case of lead, we have a few different things. You know, lead dust around the house… thinking in terms of grinding paint… anyone with an older home is most likely going to have lead paint on the windows and so forth. Anywhere there's the glossy paint close to the walls… pretty likely to have lead. And then, some people will also burn that off. That is, to remove the paint, they'll heat it. This can be inside the house, this can be outside the house, but these are gonna be good for that. What's important, though, is that you have ventilation, because when you're heating the paint to take it off, you're probably also creating carbon monoxide, which isn't a good thing. Odorless, tasteless… filter's not going to stop that. The other thing is, when you're burning paint, there's also a fair amount of organic material that is going to be generated. Once again, that may not be taken care of by this. There are other filters… if I was burning paint, and I didn't have a lot of ventilation… I mean, you've got to have something, trust me… but their model 60926, which we'll look at in a different video, would be a good item to use.

So, those are kind of the main uses for it. HEPA filter, though, is good for a lot of things. Anybody who has got severe allergies, this is something to look at. It's gonna stop all but the very tiniest particles… cigarette smoke… it won't get all the odor, but all the particulate in the air is going to get taken out. It's a really interesting filter.

So, flat pad. Got this little connector in the back and this clicks on with a quarter turn. We looked at that on some of our other videos, so I won't belabor that. It comes in a sealed pack with a pair… you get some instructions, not all that helpful I must say…

There you go! That's the 3M 2091! Thank you very much!
